Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Frühjahr 1950. Fünf Jahre nach dem Ende des Krieges. Die Sozialistische Einheitspartei beschließt auf ihrem III. Parteitag den Bau eines Eisenhüttenwerkes samt einer dazugehörigen Stadt. Kurze Zeit später strömen tausende Menschen auf die Baustelle nahe der neuen Grenze zu Polen. Unter ihnen eine Ingenieurin, ein Hüttenwerker und ein Stadtplaner. Sie kommen wegen der gutbezahlten Arbeit, der Aussicht auf eine Wohnung und auch um zu schauen, „wie die ganze Sache läuft“. Die Partei aber verfolgt mit der Stadtgründung höhere Ziele: In einem idealen Lebensumfeld sollen zukunftsfrohe, “neue Menschen erleben, was Sozialismus ist”.

German Democratic Republic. Spring 1950, five years after the end of the war. At its Third Party Congress, the Socialist Unity Party decides to build an ironworks and an associated town. A short time later, thousands of people flock to the construction site near the new border with Poland. Among them were an engineer, an ironworker and a town planner. They come for the well-paid work, the prospect of an apartment and also to see "how the whole thing is going". However, the party is pursuing higher goals with the founding of the city: In an ideal living environment, forward-looking, "new people should experience what socialism is".
